I just bought a Ih truck with a spicer 7spd in it, does anybody else have one and does yours shift hard. The guy I bought the truck from said it shifted hard for him the whole time he had it and I had difficulty shifting it.
I drove it 1,000 miles and finally when I got home I was getting a little better at it but I can tell it's going to take alot of getting used to. /quote I have a 4700 IH with a Spicer 6+1. I would say it is not hard to shift but can be difficult. Going from 2nd to 3rd is where I have the most trouble. Seems like the slot is small and hard to line up, downshifting is the same. That is the only trouble I have with mine, if I am in a hurry it is worse. I do shift with or without the clutch and it don't make any difference.
Spicer 6 Speed Truck Transmission
Would buy another one when I buy another truck. Thanks for the input, I think it's going to be something that I'll have to play around with when I get the box done to get used to shifting it. As money alows, I'm going to make a large RV out of it. I got tired of working on my pickup because it just wasn't large enough to pull my trailer.
A friend of mine turned an eagle with an 855 cummins into one about 10 years ago and he hasn't had to do anything but maintenance since. My truck is a 1990 4700 that was a Snap-on truck. It has a 20ft box with a 4ft overhang, propane generator, furnace and insulated. I had to completely gut the box because it had some water damage from leaking roof lights. I'll try and get some pictures as I'm working on it. I've got a Spicer 7 speed in a GMC and I think it's aboutlike trying to drive a reg trans in a small truck without using the clutch. I just double clutch alot to keep from messing it up.
If you go slow and easy you can do a good job on this one but you have to watch it. You have to get the rpm just right to slip in and out. I also have a Fuller 13 and it's much more easy. I once had a milk hauler who used to drive a lime spreader truck with the 7 speed and he said you just couldnot tear the thing up. And knowing him -he tried. He blew past the milk truck owner one day out on the interstate while the owner was in his pickup.
That about did it. Then he got caught 'washing the dust out of his mouth after dropping off a load-milk truck in parking lot of the area watering hole. Now he's drivng a grain truck-look out!!!
