Yardman 400 Manual

Hi, Newbie here I just bought a fairly tired 1995 Yardman 400 series lawn tractor mower. It is going to need some work but hopefully not too much.

Can anyone please direct me towards an owners/operating and/or workshop manual? I have the parts manual and I have found the right engine manual from Briggs and Stratton but MTD don't go back that far.

Also, there are issues with the deck. It is hanging too low so that the pulley brake disks do not contact the brake blocks when the lift lever is set to lock the blades (see the photo attached). How do I raise deck to the correct height? I need to replace the link link assemblies because they are all almost cut through. I have already replaced the brake blocks. Hi, Thanks for that. I did get those books from MTD. I never realised there are all these parts places around for mowers. I wondered if there were bits missing but looking at the parts lists, they are complete. There are two holes in the deck pivot lifting assembly (the elbow that lifts the deck).

I would be surprised if the millimetres cut into the linkages would be enough to drop the deck so low. I am wondering if the wrong deck lift link assemblies were fitted in the past. Do you know if they come in differing lengths? Looks like a cheaper version of a basically poor design. From your diagram you adjust rod 18 at the pin 19 by turning the nut 20. Because of the leverage effect, a small adjustment there will make a big difference to the overall height.

Similarly a small amount of wear will also make a big difference to the height Same goes for rod 31 and the two plates it locates through. Ditto for the holes in the deck hanger rails parts 36 & 41 These rails are held in by 4 bolts on each side through the foot boards which rarely come loose but they will also have a drastic effect on the deck height. That gives me something to work on. I have ordered new hangers and adjusters as the existing ones are nearly cut right through.
